Practice Based Learning - Wednesday 22 January 2020

15 January 2020

The practice will close at 1300 on Wednesday 22 January for Practice Based Learning with the other practices in Ards and North Down.  Cover will be provided by NDA DOC.  The Doctors will be attending an update on the Fertility Network, followed by an update on Atrial Fibrillation - priorities of care; screening for AF in primary care; and switching from Warfarin to DOACS. Nurses will be attending a Cervical Cytology (Smears) update.  Admin staff will be attending training on Zero Tolerance to Violence for Frontline Staff.

If you have an urgent medical problem that cannot wait until the practice reopens on Thursday 23 January at 0830 please contact NDADOC GP Out of Hours Service on 028 91 822 344.  If you have a less urgent problem your local pharmacist may be able to help - see our Choose Well page.  Alternatively it may be appropriate to Self Care until the practice reopens.  Please remember that the GP Out of Hours Service is for urgent problems only, where you cannot wait until your usual Practice reopens.

Proposed Relocation of Surgery Premises

11 December 2019

We have asked the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) to consider a proposal to relocate our premises from Silverbirch Medical Practice, 39a Silverbirch Road, BT19 6EU to Unit 4a Ashbury Shopping Centre, Bangor, BT19 6TH (above Gordon's Pharmacy).  To find out more, see the proposed plans and access our patient consultation survey please visit our Proposed Relocation page.

Pharmacy First for Sore Throats, Colds, Flu-Like Symptoms, Coughs and Acute Bronchitis

9 December 2019

Pharmacy First is a service funded by the Health and Social Care Board.  This service enables patients to consult their community pharmacist first for advice and treatment for sore throats, colds and flu-like illness.

The aim of the service is to displace activity, including consultations, advice and generating prescriptions for these common conditions, from General Practice and Out of Hours services to a community pharmacy based service.  This frees up GP time and allows your GP to see you and other patients when expert medical advice is needed.

Winter Pressures and Demand Management

9 December 2019

We have now activated our demand management and winter pressure plan to deal with the increased demand caused by winter sickness.  This means we will increase our telephone triaging and emergency appointments and prioritise urgent problems first.  Unfortunately this means there will be fewer routine calls and routine appointments available and patients with routine issues will have to wait longer.  The Practice has contracted with the Health and Social Care Board to provide demand management and so we have also been funded to employ locums to help increase capacity over winter.  We would ask that all patients help ease the pressure on the practice by using self care where possible.  For Winter Ailments like coughs, colds and flu-like illnesses you can find advice on our Winter Ailments and Self Care pages.  We also encourage patients to use the Pharmacy First Service.

Flu Vaccinations

19 November 2019

This year's dedicated flu clinics are now complete.  Thank you for helping us make them a big success.  We vaccinated several hundred people for flu, shingles and pneumococcal vaccine over two dedicated clinics. These worked efficiently and effectively and we received a lot of positive feedback - thank you!

If you haven't yet received your flu vaccination - don't worry! We are providing a catch up service. Please contact the practice to make an appointment.  Please bring your completed pink flu consent form with you.  Please arrange your vaccination as soon as possible as flu virus will start circulating very soon!

Chickenpox vaccine | Private chickenpox vaccination | Private chickenpox vaccine available

13 March 2019

We now have chickenpox vaccine in stock and we are offering private vaccination for suitable patients over 12 months of age.  To find out more visit our chickenpox vaccine page.

Sexual Health Screening

16 May 2018

We now offer asymptomatic sexual health screening at Silverbirch.  This is available for any patient who doesn't have symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection but would like a sexual health check up to put their mind at ease.  It is beneficial to diagnose and treat sexual health infections early.  The sexual health screen includes tests for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, HIV and Syphillis.  If you would like sexual health screening please make an appointment with Nurse McVea.
